GRAND LAKE MATAGAMON CANOE TRIP (3 nights)

Follow a portion of Henry David Thoreau's trip to "The Maine Woods" on this canoe trip to Grand Lake Matagamon (headwater for the East Branch of the Penobscot River), in Baxter State Park.
We'll put in our canoes, and take out, near the north entrance to Baxter State Park, and each day will be spent paddling & exploring historic parts of Grand Lake Matagamon including the Old Sawmill site (former site of the Diamond Match Co.), Grand Pitch Falls on Webster Stream, Louse Island where Thoreau spent time on his trip down the East Branch, as well as plenty of time for bird watching, moose watching, photography, swimming & relaxing.
Each night will be spent in either a rustic leanto shelter or tent-site at a different lakeside location.

A very picturesque and interesting location, Grand Lake Matagamon, with its remoteness, provides a large measure of solitude and can take several days to explore. There are several islands that provide beautiful spots for picnics, swimming, or just relaxing. The loons usually serenade each morning & evening, and the fishing can be excellent.
